UWAA HISTORY
The Ukrainian Women’s Association was formed in Lviv, Ukraine in 1921.
After WWII, many Ukrainian Immigrants arrived in Australia as Displaced Persons, mainly during the years 1948-1952. While all adults were contracted to work for 2 years, women with young children were temporarily housed in migrant holding camps.
The first branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association Australia (UWAA) was founded on 13 September 1949 at Cowra migrant holding camp in NSW.
UWAA’s patron is Princess Olha of Kyiv.
In 1953 the UWAA became a member of the National Council of Women of Australia.
The number of Ukrainian-Australians increased in the years following Ukraine’s Independence in 1991. In the 2016 Census, 48,000 people identified as having Ukrainian heritage.
Every five years, members gather in Cowra’s Europa Park to commemorate the founding of the UWAA.
